Begin with device and app controls
Look for child profiles, content maturity ratings, purchasing PINs and app-access restrictions. Some devices let you limit which applications are available in a child profile. Individual streaming services may also offer their own profile settings that need to be configured separately.
A channel list is not a parental control
A category labelled “family” may not be enough to stop a child navigating to other content. Review what the player actually restricts and whether a PIN is required to switch profiles or open unsuitable material. If a particular app lacks safeguards, consider whether it is appropriate for unsupervised use.
Protect payment and account access
Avoid storing payment details in profiles shared with children unless purchases are PIN-protected. Keep passwords and subscription credentials private. Make sure the household can recognise genuine app updates and avoid unknown download links or requests to install remote-control software.
Review the setup together
Show children how to get help if they see inappropriate content, check profile settings after app updates and keep the television in a place where adults can supervise when practical. Ask service providers what controls their official apps support before subscribing.
