Confirm captions exist for the programme
Not every title or live channel carries subtitle tracks. While a programme plays, open the application’s audio-and-subtitle menu and look for available languages. If the menu lists none, toggling a television-wide caption option cannot create a missing track.
Check both the app and device
Applications may have their own subtitle styling and on/off controls. A television, Fire TV or mobile device can also include accessibility settings. Check the player first, then the device. If captions appear in other apps, the problem is likely title-specific or service-specific.
Fix poor readability or timing
Increase caption size or contrast where available, choose a different supported subtitle track and restart playback. On live TV, caption timing can be affected by the broadcaster’s original feed. Record the approximate programme time if the delay is persistent.
Make accessibility a purchasing question
If captions are important in your household, test the particular channels and languages you need before subscribing. Ask for a specific availability confirmation, not a general claim that the service “supports subtitles”. Content accessibility features vary by programme and region.
Quick checklist
Use this short list before changing settings or contacting support:
- Check subtitle tracks in the playing video
- Inspect device accessibility settings
- Try another programme
- Verify the languages you need before buying
