What download speed means
The download figure estimates how quickly data arrives under the test conditions. Streaming usually needs sustained delivery over time, not just a brief peak. Repeat tests at different times of day and test close to the actual viewing device to understand the conditions that matter.
Latency and jitter matter differently
Latency measures delay, while jitter describes how much that delay varies. They can matter for interactive activity and help flag connection instability. A perfect-looking speed test does not rule out application, Wi-Fi or provider issues, so interpret the numbers together.
Test the right part of the network
Compare a wired laptop to the router with a wireless device near the television. If wired performance is consistent but Wi-Fi is not, focus on the home wireless link. If both drop together, check the broadband provider’s service status and any line faults.
Build a useful record
Note the date, time, location, device, network type and results from several tests. Include whether only one legal streaming service was affected or everything slowed down. This is more helpful to a network provider than one screenshot of a low speed result.
Quick checklist
Use this short list before changing settings or contacting support:
- Run tests from the viewing location
- Compare Wi-Fi and Ethernet when possible
- Record several different times of day
- Match test results to actual streaming symptoms
