Select the cable and television input
Check your laptop for an HDMI output or a USB-C connector that supports external displays. Use a suitable cable or video-capable adapter, connect it to the TV and choose that HDMI input. If you see no picture, test the same TV port with another device before changing Windows settings.
Choose duplicate or extended display
In Windows display settings, select Duplicate if you want the TV to show what is on your laptop. Extend is useful for a second workspace but can make video open on the wrong screen. Set a resolution and refresh rate supported by the television and cable; the highest available setting is not always the most stable.
Send sound to the television
If picture works but audio still comes from the laptop, open Windows sound output settings and select the HDMI display or receiver. Increase volume in the app, Windows and television separately. A soundbar connected to the TV may also require the correct TV audio-output setting.
Test legitimate playback
Try a known legal service in an up-to-date browser or official app. Some protected content requires compatible display connections and may show errors with older adapters. Do not attempt to defeat a content-protection message; use a supported TV app or the service’s help pages instead.
Quick checklist
Use this short list before changing settings or contacting support:
- Choose the correct HDMI source
- Select Duplicate in display settings
- Switch audio output to the TV
- Confirm the streaming service supports external displays
